Get a book or do some general reading.

Bonzias are fairly fragile because they have such limited root systems. Some established bonsias need to be watered twice a day during hot weather.

Your tree will want bright light, not direct beating down midday sun but a little early morning or early evening sun would be ok. Try to find a spot it likes and leave it there, it helps to have a regular watering schedule (like Tuesdays and Fridays) that you step up or down and the temperature and moisture of the seasons vary.

If you really want to keep it alive, I would get a book, or do some general reading. I've killed a few bonsias in my time, even though I was being careful and lavishing attention (I thought) on them.
References :
give it water once in a while, some sun (but they don't need it) and air. You could also give it Bonsai Food Fertilizer
References :
Every bonsai grower has their own mix, so there is nothing that is 100% correct.

Akadama soil from Japan is $40 per 20 lbs.
Pumice or expanded shale is about $10 for 40 lbs.
Landscapers mix is $5 for 40 lbs.

Akadama is great for getting fine roots, but is too expensive to use if you are not working on quality material.

I use 75% shale, 25% landscape mix.
The landscape mix will hold some moisture and give a little bit of nutrients.
The main source of food comes from liquid feeding in the summer.

These plants can grow huge, especially the banyan tree.

Do a bit of research at your local library and you will get a much better idea of how to proceed.

Now go drink a beer and relax.
References :
Dallas Bonsai 15 yrs

Bonsai (common definition): the difficult and often depressing art of killing such plants. I like to use a low maintenance houseplant - Adenium obesum. Google "Adenium bonsai" for photos and more info. It's also is a flowering plant that is easy to graft for different colored flowers on the same plant. An easier plant to bonsai you'll never find. RScott
References :
The names of the plants are trees. (or shrubs, sometimes)

ANY tree can be made into a bonsai...pine, juniper, maple, elm...and shrubs too - azalea is popular.

"Bonsai" is merely a technique of pruning and training to that you have very small tree that appear very old.
