First, do the research on the history, art and how to produce, grow, and maintain a bonsai plant! It is best to select a species common to your geographic location as there will be fewer problems with providing suitable climatic conditions. Some people like plants with small leaves so they look like a miniature tree. Others like the challenge of dwarfing just about any tree or woody shrub! Don’t forget that bonsai require constant attention in that they have very little soil to hold water and nutrients.
