A lesson in branch placement, taught from a very old San Jose Juniper bonsai that was created by a Japanese bonsai master and cared for by an elder friend of mine for many years. The tree is currently potted in a very fine old Tokoname pot.
Getting the right … Getting the right soil mix is everything. Get it right and trees grow well and everything else is easy. Get it wrong and trees will grow poorly or die. Get some builder’s sand from Home Depot or Lowe’s and if you cannot find decomposed granite or pumice, then get some spill absorbent from Autozone but make sure the particles are made of fired clay.
Thanks very much. … Thanks very much. That makes perfectly good sense. I currently have 1 ficus I bought from Walmart (I know, I know) I just wanted something to start on. So how crucial is the soil mix in Bonsai? Im using standard potting soil at the moment.
It is bad for the … It is bad for the tree to be constantly pinching and picking at it. The elders in my bonsai club used to say that a beginner should get at least five trees, because if you only have one, you’ll love it to death. On fast growing junipers, if you want to maintain profile, pinch it every two to three weeks during the growing season.
Is it better to nit … Is it better to nit pick every few days or wait once a month? Like if you have the time is it bad to constantly be picking at it?
Awsome tree and … Awsome tree and toutorial!! This will really help me establish design and form into my young pre-bonsai trees. Thanks!! Keep em coming!
Cool, another great … Cool, another great video! I really like the juniper bonsai, i might purchase one as my second bonsai tree at some point. Interesting story, and beautiful tree, thanks Charles! :]
