I have 3 African tree seedlings in pots, Acacia Galpinii, to be exact. I want to make bonsais out of them but I live in Holland and do not have enough natural light in the house. They need to be outside actually but our climate is to cold for this kind of tree, so I went looking for grow lights and the best I could find was energy saving lamps that emit 100W of light using 18W of energy. I do not know if it would be enough to sustain the plants through the winter and do I need more than 3 of these laps.

Not likely.

The sun is giving them 1000Watts and that is what they are aiming for as a ‘full meal’ for the plants.

If you are only getting 18Watts of energy in I can’t see how you get 100Watts out as you can’t make energy from nothing. However, even assuming 100 Watts that is going to be pretty low.

I personally tried something like what you are doing here in Canada with a Mango tree from the Philippines. I used 3 x 75Watt grow lights. It was a very unhappy mango tree, it did grow–sort of.

It grew very spindly and seemed to be ‘reaching’ for the light as it wasn’t enough so it ended up stretched and unattractive.

It is not energy efficient, but hydroponic grow lights are going to be your best choice for a healthy tree (metal halide type)

I bought a mini-bonsai kit because I’d love to add a little green in my room.
I’ve germinated seeds before, but these ones just won’t go.
It’s a jack-pine seed plant, and the instructions say to soak seeds in water for 24 hours (which I did) in clean spring water.
Then it says to place seeds in a damp paper towel and put it in a plastic bag, place in the refridgerator and leave it there for 7 days. I tried that with two of the 6 seeds I was given, and neither of them germinated. So I took one out of the fridge and left one in, and it’s been 4-5 days since then without any luck.

Remember, this is for a mini-bonsai plant that only grows to 5 inches at full height.

What am I doing wrong?

You may have to Freeze them to get them to germinate. If you really want to Bonsai, check out some small shrubs at a local nursery, check out the base of the trunks, buy the gnarliest you can find.

That like to be around your house plants. I have a bunch of Ivy’s, bonzai tree and a little christmas tree. I’ve been killing these little gnats for awhile now. They just seem to be popping up after I kill them.

Any safe sprays or methods to rid me of this problem.

Sounds like fungus gnats. Try Gardensalive.com they have a product that you put in the soil around the plant. It kills the larvae of the gnats. It take two or three applications to get rid of them but it really works. It is a bacteria and not a chemical so it is safe for kids and pets.

We keep a bottle around all the time so when we get new plants we are ready.

Ok so my bonsai tree looks dead but on closer inspection ther eis new growth that is green. Is it dead or dormant? I have no idea on how to care for them..pls help thx. ** The question is is it dormant or dead** it’s needles look yellow i know i let it dry out but did i kill it?

It is probably dead if you let it dry out. Been there, done that.
If you have watered it and it looks like it is growing then maybe it is ok. Don’t water again unless the soil seems dryish as watering too much can kill them, too. If it is alive and looks like it is growing, you should be able to tell in a week or so if the growing part is getting bigger. Otherwise, it’s a goner.
